No veteran of any the Superfund sites (total of 130 bases) was notified of their possible exposure to contaminants and their health effects. An unknown number are seriously ill and have not connected the dots to military service. This is a great disservice to those who served honorably.
The information about the health effects of exposure to EPA's Contaminants of Concern (COCs) would be helpful to medical care providers. EPA links the COCs to the health effects identified by The Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Registry (ATSDR). The first page on the EPA Superfund site under the heading "Contamination" links to the EPA's COCs and the ATSDR's health effecs. Just click on "view contaminants of concern at this site."
The Veteran Service Organizations have excellent websites and could easily provide a link to the EPA Superfund sites. I’ve contacted all of the major ones. Only the Catholic War Veterans agreed to contact their membership. We don’t need Congress to get the word out. If you belong to a VSO, please encourage them to provide a link to the EPA Superfund sites. See attached file for current list of military bases on the NPL.
